Professor Kate Sutherland

Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research (WEHI), VIC

Professor Kate Sutherland is a Laboratory Head at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research (WEHI), and an internationally recognised lung cancer biologist. She completed a Bachelor of Science (Hons) degree and PhD from The University of Melbourne in 2005. From 2006-2012, she undertook postdoctoral studies under the mentorship of Prof Anton Berns at the Netherlands Cancer Institute, before returning to Melbourne in 2013 to establish an independent research group at WEHI. Her research team conducts fundamental molecular studies with applied approaches aimed at improving therapeutic outcomes of lung cancer patients. By leveraging genetically engineered mouse models and analyses of clinical samples, her research has made seminal contributions to our understanding of the cellular origins of lung cancer (Cancer Cell, PNAS), elucidated key molecular mechanisms driving tumour progression (Cell Metabolism, Nature Communications), and identified critical regulators of anti-tumour immunity (Cancer Cell, Journal of Thoracic Oncology).
